This Extractives Hub Insight is focussed on Somalia’s extractive industries and their potential to drive the realisation of development goals beneficial to the citizens of the country.
The country is emerging from a long civil war and is beset by competing claims for territorial political legitimacy in its north-west. The security situation remains tenuous in the capital, Mogadishu, and is far worse than that in other southern Federal Member States (“States”) of the country. Hence, the above ground risks to extractive industries investment are perceived to be very high, and both the importance and the difficulty of achieving extractives for development are significantly elevated.
This Insight discusses these and other issues relating to good governance of the extractives sector in Somalia, and extractives for Somalian development.
